The USS Farragut (DDG-99) is a destroyer in the United States Navy and belongs to the Arleigh Burke class . The ship's namesake is David Glasgow Farragut , a well-known naval officer from the 19th century.

history

The Farragut was commissioned in 1998. The ship was built by the Bath Iron Works shipyard , which belongs to the General Dynamics group. The keel of the destroyer was laid on January 9, 2004 in the BIW dock in Bath , Maine . Construction took a year and half, launching was on 23 July 2005. On this day also was launching ceremony held. Godmother was Maine Senator Susan Collins .

After the first test drives, the Farragut was officially put into service on June 10, 2006 and stationed at the naval base Naval Station Mayport in Florida .

In 2008 the Farragut deployed alongside the USS George Washington (CVN-73) for exercise Partnership of the Americas . In early 2010 she ran alongside the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) . The destination of the trip was the Middle East, where the combat group supported the US forces in Iraq and the fight against pirates off Somalia . On February 21, 2010, a Farragut helicopter prevented pirates from boarding the MV Barakaale , and later the destroyer brought down the pirates' boat. On March 31, 2010, she brought up the ship from other pirates who had attacked the MV Evita . The pirate ship was sunk by the Farragut . Only a few days later, on April 16, the destroyer's helicopter prevented pirates from boarding the MV Thor Traveler .

In June 2012 the Farragut moved again alongside the Dwight D. Eisenhower in the Mediterranean and Arabian waters. From September 1st to 4th, 2012, the Farragut was on a visit to the Heppenser Groden naval base in Wilhelmshaven . The destroyer's visit was related to the ship's participation in the Northern Eagle maneuver . On January 9, 2020, an incident occurred in the north of the Arabian Sea when Farragut, in the 5th US fleet, was pushed to starboard by a Russian military ship, which could have led to a collision.

Armament

For defense against approaching missiles, the ship received the RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) anti - aircraft missiles, which are fired from the Vertical Launching System . For further air defense, a close-in-weapon system in the form of the Phalanx MK 15 RAM was subsequently installed behind the aft chimney structure , which was not originally intended for construction from DDG 85 (Block IV).
