The USS Howard (DDG-83) is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer . The United States Navy named the ship after Jimmie E. Howard , a highly decorated u. a. awarded the Medal of Honor , Marine , who died in 1993 and fought in both Korea and Vietnam.
history
DDG-83 was commissioned in 1996 and laid down at Bath Iron Works in late 1998 . After just under a year, the destroyer was launched and christened. The Howard was officially put into service in October 2001 after the shipyard test drives.
In 2004 the Howard operated with the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) for exercises in the Pacific. In 2008 the destroyer moved to the Persian Gulf with the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) . On this voyage, the Howard stayed with the Ukrainian cargo ship Faina , which was captured by pirates off Somalia and loaded military equipment, including the T-72 main battle tank , for Kenya. At the end of 2008, the group started their journey home to San Diego. Shortly afterwards hydraulic fluid emerged from the port shaft of the Howard , whereupon it was switched off. The Howard drove the 9000 kilometers to Guam at reduced speed . At Apra Harbor , divers and technicians examined the propulsion systems and finally gave the green light to cross the Pacific another 9,000 kilometers with just one wave. After a refueling stop in Pearl Harbor , Hawaii, the Howard reached San Diego on November 29, the ship was docked there and repaired.
In 2009 a transfer followed with the Reagan in the western Pacific. In June 2011, the Howard took part in an exercise with the Malaysian Navy.
