The USS Ralph Johnson (DDG-114) is a United States Navy destroyer belonging to the Arleigh Burke class and the 64th unit in that class. The ship is named after Ralph H. Johnson .
history
Surname
The ship's name bearer is Ralph H. Johnson. On April 20, 1970, Johnson was awarded the Medal of Honor , the highest honor awarded by the United States Armed Forces, by Richard Nixon . In March 1968, during the Vietnam War, he threw himself on a hand grenade, protecting his comrades in the Marine Corps . He died immediately as a result of the wound.
construction
After only three destroyers of the Zumwalt class were made, the USN decided to purchase new Burkes . DDG-114 was ordered from Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula , Mississippi in 2011 . SECNAV Raymond Edwin Mabus announced in February 2012 that the ship would be named after Ralph Johnson. The keel was laid on September 12, 2014. It was launched a year and a half later. On April 2, 2016, the destroyer was christened by Georgiana McRaven, wife of William H. McRaven . The ship was actually supposed to be delivered in August 2016, but there were delivery problems and therefore DDG-114 was only delivered towards the end of 2017. The ship was put into service on March 24, 2018.
