The USS Rafael Peralta (DDG-115) is a United States Navy destroyer belonging to the Arleigh Burke class and the 65th unit of that class. The ship is named after Rafael Peralta .

history

Surname

The ship's name bearer is Rafael Peralta. Peralta was awarded the Navy Cross , the highest honor in the United States Navy, in June 2015 by SECNAV Ray Mabus . During Operation Phantom Fury , Peralta was wounded when he was with other Marines of 3rd Marine Division III. Marine Expeditionary Force searched homes. When the rebels threw a hand grenade, he put it under his body to protect the soldiers who followed. He died immediately as a result of the wound.

construction

After only three destroyers of the Zumwalt class were made, the USN decided to purchase new Burkes . DDG-115 was ordered from Bath Iron Works in 2011 . The keel was laid on October 19, 2014. On October 31, 2015, the destroyer was baptized by Rosa Maria Peralta, mother of the namesake. The Rafael Peralta was launched the next day. On February 3, 2017, the ship was delivered to the USN and put into service in San Diego on July 29, 2017 , which is also the home port.
