The USS Roosevelt (DDG-80) is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer . The United States Navy named the ship explicitly both after the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt , and after his wife Eleanor Roosevelt .
history
DDG-80 was ordered in 1995 and laid down at Ingalls Shipbuilding in late 1997 . The construction took just over a year, the final equipment and the shipyard test drives then lasted until October 14, 2000, when the Roosevelt was officially put into service.
In 2002 the Roosevelt moved to European waters, including visiting Gibraltar . In 2004 she participated in exercises with the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) . In 2006 the destroyer operated in the war on terror together with the Dutch frigate De Zeven Provinciën in the Indian Ocean. The two ships wanted to intercept a South Korean trawler off the Somali coast that had been taken over by pirates. After the pirates threatened to kill the crew of the trawler, the two ships had to withdraw. In 2007, the destroyer replaced the Monterey as the flagship of Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 . In 2008 he moved to the side of the Iwo Jima , and in 2009 he took part in the New York Fleet Week with it. On the night of March 16-17, 2014, the destroyer was involved in the seizure of a Morning Glory oil tanker off Cyprus, which had previously sailed under the North Korean flag for 6 months. Shortly before boarding the tanker, the registration of North Korea was withdrawn due to a breach of contract and thus became stateless. The operation was carried out by a Navy Seals Team command. The tanker was supposed to carry out an oil delivery to middlemen for the benefit of the separatist rebels in the Kyrenaica region .
