history

CG-61 was commissioned in 1984 and laid down at Ingalls Shipbuilding in 1987 . After just over a year, the cruiser was launched and was christened. In the summer of 1990 it was put into service in the US Navy.

In the summer of 1993, the Monterey moved alongside the USS America (CV-66) in the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean. In the Mediterranean, the combat group took part in Operations Deny Flight , Provide Promise and Sharp Guard , on its way to the Indic from the Red Sea, in Operation Southern Watch and finally in Operation Continue Hope .

In 1996 the cruiser replaced the USS Mississippi (CGN-40) in the Mediterranean. In January the Monterey drove an exercise with the Russian Admiral Kuznetsov , followed by a one-year overhaul in the summer. In 1998 the Monterey was deployed alongside the USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) , and in 1999 alongside the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) . In 2001 she took part in the UNITAS exercise , and after the terrorist attacks on September 11, she sailed with the USS George Washington (CVN-73) off New York City . In 2002 she moved with the carrier as part of Operation Enduring Freedom .

In 2004 the ship was reassigned to a new aircraft carrier; with the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) was an exercise in the Mediterranean. During the Partnership of the Americas exercise, the cruiser again protected Washington , in 2007 it was the flagship of Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 in the Mediterranean, and was later replaced by the USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) . The Monterey took part in the New York Fleet Week in May 2008, the group's lead ship was the USS Kearsarge (LHD-3) . In August, the cruiser moved alongside the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) towards the Mediterranean and from there to the Indian Ocean. There the Monterey was part of Combined Task Force 151, which was deployed to combat piracy off the coast of Somalia . On March 3, 2009, the cruiser's helicopter took off, preventing an attack on the merchant ship MV Courier . The pirate ship was later seized by the German frigate Rheinland-Pfalz (F 209) , the crew imprisoned and taken to Kenya.

In March 2011, the Monterey moved to European waters, where she sailed as part of the National Missile Defense . This voyage was extended in September 2011 after the commander of the replacement USS The Sullivans (DDG-68) was released from his command.

In the air raid on Damascus and Homs on April 14, 2018, Monterey participated with the deployment of 30 Tomahawk cruise missiles from the Red Sea.
