The USS Vicksburg (CG-69) is a guided missile cruiser of the United States Navy and belongs Ticonderoga-class cruiser to.

history

CG-69 was commissioned in 1988 and laid down at Ingalls Shipbuilding in May 1990 . In September 1991 the ship was launched and was christened. Godmother was Tricia Lott, the wife of the then US Senator Trent Lott . On November 14, 1992, the Vicksburg was officially put into service.

The first voyage of the Vicksburg took place in 1994 as escort of the USS Saratoga (CV-60) . The combat group moved to the Mediterranean, where they participated in the missions Operation Deny Flight , Operation Sharp Guard and Operation Provide Promise . In 1997, the cruiser was part of the combat group around the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) to participate in Operation Deliberate Guard and Operation Southern Watch in the Persian Gulf . In 1998 the Vicksburg had problems with the computers of the Aegis combat system and was therefore removed from the mission rotation.

At the end of 1999, the Vicksburg was the only US warship to take part in exercise UNITAS . In 2002 and 2001 the ship was involved in tests of the Cooperative Engagement Capability System. In March 2002 she was again part of the Kennedy Combat Group and took part in Operation Enduring Freedom . In 2004, again on the side of the Kennedy , the Vicksburg was involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom . Also in 2006, the Vicksburg was on the side of the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) in the Gulf. During this voyage, the US Navy ships operated among others with the French Charles de Gaulle (R 91) .

In 2007 the ship moved again to the Persian Gulf as escort of the USS Kearsarge (LHD-3) . During this voyage, the Vicksburg made out two Iranian submarines of the Kilo class near Iranian territorial waters , which were sailing on the surface. In October 2008, the cruiser took part in the sinking of the decommissioned destroyer USS O'Bannon (DD-987) and in 2009 moved alongside the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) in the Indian Ocean to pick up Somali pirates to fight. With the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) , the cruiser sailed for the Mediterranean and Indian Oceans in 2012.

The ship was supposed to be decommissioned on March 31, 2013. The Navy later decided against it and kept the Vicksburg .

In February 2015, the ship entered the Black Sea to take part in a maneuver with ships from NATO countries Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Canada, Romania and Turkey.
