history

construction

The Gettysburg was commissioned from Bath Iron Works in 1986 and laid down there in 1988. The launch took place after a construction period of eleven months, the ship was named after the Battle of Gettysburg .

Calls

The Gettysburg was first used in 1992 as an escort for the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) in the Mediterranean. In 1993 the cruiser was used in Operation Support Democracy off Haiti. After only two weeks, however, the ship was relieved. The next regular mission began in June 1994 , when the Gettysburg moved to the Baltic Sea for exercise BALTOPS . With the USS Halyburton (FFG-40) the Gettysburg visited two ports (including Cape Town) in South Africa from November 9th to 14th, 1994. This was the first friendship visit by US ships to South Africa since February 1967. On November 30, the two ships were ordered to help the Achille Lauro , a cruise ship that caught fire in the Horn of Africa . The burned out hull of the ship sank on December 2nd. The Gettysburg supplied the passengers evacuated on a tanker with food and medical supplies.

In 1996 the Gettysburg was on the way with the combat group around the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) and took part in Operation Desert Strike . Two years later, again as a guard for the Enterprise , the Gettysburg took an active part in Operation Desert Fox . Later in the year there were also missions in the context of Operation Deliberate Force off Kosovo .

In early 2001 the cruiser went again with the Enterprise and carried out exercises and port visits in the Atlantic. Shortly before Operation Enduring Freedom began , the Gettysburg reached her home port. In 2004 the Gettysburg operated with seven carrier combat groups in the Atlantic during the Summer Pulse exercise .

In 2007, the Gettysburg moved with four Arleigh Burke class destroyers and the submarine USS Philadelphia (SSN-690) as escort for the carrier Enterprise as part of the fight against terrorism. In 2008 the cruiser took part in the BALTOPS exercise in the Baltic Sea and then in the celebrations of the Kiel Week. In 2009 the Gettysburg moved alongside the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) in the Indian Ocean to fight Somali pirates . In May 2011, the cruiser sailed alongside the USS George HW Bush (CVN-77) in Arab and European waters.

Trivia

In the thriller -novel The Legend of the American writer Tom Clancy plays the Gettysburg a decisive role, as it is thanks to an experimental software upgrades able, one from the People's Republic of China in Washington, DC launched CSS-4 - ICBM with to shoot down nuclear warheads with their anti-aircraft missiles shortly before they hit.
