history

The ship was built at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula , Mississippi , and Bunker Hill is named after the battle of the same name in 1775. The ship was the first unit in the class to feature the Mk 41 Vertical Launching System .

period of service

After commissioning, the Bunker Hill crossed the Panama Canal and took part in its first deployment in July 1987. He brought them as escorts for the Iowa-class battleship belonging battleship USS Missouri (BB-63) in the Persian Gulf, where they should ensure the safe passage of cargo ships. The next mission was from Yokosuka , Japan , the Bunker Hill was now escort of the aircraft carrier combat group led by the USS Midway (CV-41) .

As of November 1990, took Bunker Hill at the Second Gulf War in part. She acted as a command ship for air defense and shot down cruise missiles on Iraq. She later also helped monitor the southern no-fly zone in Operation Southern Watch .

In March 1996, the Bunker Hill took part in the observation of the situation in the Formosa Strait with the carrier combat group around USS Nimitz (CVN-68) after the People's Republic of China had announced and carried out missile tests near the island of Taiwan .

From 1998 the Bunker Hill took part in the search of cargo ships in order to enforce the embargo against Iraq, and it also served as escort for the USS Tarawa (LHA-1) during relief operations off East Timor .

At the beginning of 2007, Bunker Hill and the USS Ramage (DDG-61) were integrated into Task Force 150 under British leadership, which provided security off the east coast of Africa, especially the Horn of Africa . Between March 2008 and February 2009 the Bunker Hill was undergoing extensive modernization in the shipyard. In early 2010, Bunker Hill was dispatched to the side of the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) off the coast of Haiti , where it supported the United States' humanitarian operation after the severe earthquake . In December 2010, the next mission began alongside the Carl Vinson in Asian waters, followed by another at the end of 2011.
