The USS Normandy (CG-60) is a United States Navy guided missile cruiser and belongs to the Ticonderoga class . It was named after the Battle of Normandy during World War II .

history

CG-60 was commissioned from Bath Iron Works at the end of 1984 and laid down there in 1987. The ship was launched after less than a year and entered service with the US Navy at the end of 1989.

The Normandy's first mission led her to escort the USS America (CV-66) into the Second Gulf War , where she fired 26 Tomahawk cruise missiles. Also in 1993, the cruiser, again at America's side, sailed into hot waters as part of the Provide Promise , Deny Flight and Sharp Guard operations in the Adriatic Sea.

In the following years she was regularly transferred to the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the Persian Gulf, where she took part in Operation Southern Watch in 1997 .

In 2002 the Normandy drove as part of Operation Enduring Freedom , and then in 2005 for security operations in the Persian Gulf. In May 2007, the Normandy took over the service as the flagship of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 from the USS Mahan (DDG-72) in order to circumnavigate Africa with the group. During a layover in the Seychelles in September , the Normandy handed over the flag service to USS Bainbridge (DDG-96) .

In 2008 the cruiser drove exercises with the British aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal (R07) . In early 2010, the Normandy was used to help the victims of the severe earthquake in Haiti . Among other things, helicopters with relief supplies took off from their flight deck. In May 2010, the cruiser laid alongside the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) .

According to Jane's Information Group , the ship should be taken out of service in fiscal 2013 as part of savings. In April 2015, she was relocated to the Arabian Sea off Yemen alongside the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) . In the spring of 2018, the ship carried out training runs as part of the aircraft carrier combat group of the USS Harry S. Truman .
