history
The Princeton , named after the Battle of Princeton in New Jersey during the American Revolutionary War , was commissioned by Ingalls Shipbuilding in 1983 and laid down there in 1986. The launch took place on October 2, 1987, the commissioning with the United States Navy took place in 1989.
The Princeton made its first mission during Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf. On February 18, 1991 the ship ran into two sea mines . The superstructure was damaged, as well as the rudder and the sealing of the shaft on port side. Despite severe damage to the stern of the ship, the Princeton was able to stay on station for 30 hours until it was relieved. The first repairs were carried out in Dubai, after which the Princeton drove back to North America under its own power, where it was completely restored.
In 1999 and 2000 the Princeton was completely overhauled. In 2007 the ship took part in exercise Valiant Shield . In early 2008, the cruiser moved to the Western Pacific with the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) , which replaced the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) , which is stationed in Japan but had to go into dry dock for overhaul. With the Nimitz , the cruiser took part in a port visit in Hong Kong in April . This was followed by an overhaul. In June 2010 the Princeton was relocated to the Persian Gulf.
