The USS Kearsarge (LHD-3) is an amphibious assault ship of the United States Navy and belongs to the Wasp class . It is named after the sloop Kearsarge , which in turn was named after Mount Kearsarge in New Hampshire .

history

The ship was commissioned in 1987 and laid down at Ingalls Shipbuilding in early 1990 . After just over two years, the ship was launched and was christened Kearsarge . In October 1993 it was officially put into service with the US Navy.

The first mission after passing the tests took place in 1995 in the Mediterranean. At the end of the mission, the pilot Scott O'Grady was rescued from the Kearsarge . O'Grady was shot down over Bosnia during Operation Deny Flight . In 1997 civilians were evacuated from Freetown , Sierra Leone , followed in 1999 by operations as part of Operation Allied Force (combat operations ) and Operation Shining Hope (humanitarian operations for refugees in Albania).

An initial overhaul was carried out at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard during the early months of 2002 . In 2003 the ship sailed in the Persian Gulf during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom . In 2004 and 2005 the next missions followed as part of the war on terror , the Kearsarge relocated to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden . On August 19, 2005, while the ship was in the port of Aqaba in Jordan , the Kearsarge and the USS Ashland (LSD-48) were attacked with missiles, which the ships missed.

In 2007 the Kearsarge was again the focus of an Expeditionary Strike Group . In December the ship took part in a relief mission for Bangladesh . The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) was on board at this time . In May 2008 she took part in Fleet Week in New York as a lead ship with the cruisers USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) and USS Monterey (CG 61) , the destroyers USS The Sullivans (DDG 68) and USS Nitze (DDG-94) as well as two frigates and a lubricator assigned to the Canadian Navy and a cutter assigned to the United States Coast Guard . In August 2010, the Kearsarge was relocated to bring relief supplies to the regions affected by the flood disaster in Pakistan .

In March 2011, the Kearsarge was relocated to the Mediterranean with the USS Ponce (LPD-15) to strengthen the US presence during the unrest in Libya .

At the beginning of April 2013, the ship was withdrawn from the Mediterranean area and moved through the Suez Canal towards the Arabian Sea. It has not been established whether the transfer of the USS Kearsage was related to the tensions on the Korean Peninsula .

In 2017, the Kearsarge got ready to support disaster relief after Hurricane Harvey in Texas . Since this aid was not requested, it was able to help with disaster relief after Hurricanes Irma and Maria in the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico .

Trivia

During the passage of the ship through the Suez Canal , the crew took a time-lapse photo and later made it public.
