The USS Bonhomme Richard ( LHD -6) is an amphibious assault ship of the Wasp class of amphibious warfare of the United States Navy . She travels regularly as part of an American Expeditionary Strike Group , a rapid reaction force for landing operations from the sea.
The name of the ship has a long tradition in the US Navy, since 1779 Louis XVI. provided the 13 colonies with a frigate built in 1765 and named Duc de Duras . Her commander, John Paul Jones , one of the first commanders in the US Navy, then renamed the ship the USS Bonhomme Richard . The reason was the writing of Benjamin Franklin 's ambassador to Paris at the time , Poor Richard's Almanack , which appeared in France under the title Les Maximes du Bonhomme Richard . The current ship is the fourth bearer of this name.

On July 12, 2020, the USS Bonhomme Richard caught fire at Naval Base San Diego after an explosion on a lower cargo deck. A fire spread quickly as the fire extinguishing system was not operational due to maintenance work. Only 160 people were on board during the maintenance. Up to July 16, 1500 helicopter firefighting flights had been carried out and thousands of liters of water were thrown from the air. 38 military personnel and 23 civilians were slightly injured in the explosion and the fire fighting. On July 16, the US Navy announced that the fire had been extinguished after five days.
