RIMPAC (short for Rim of the Pacific ; dt .: marginal zone of the Pacific ) is a two year barred multinational military exercise in June or July to Honolulu , Hawaii . It is being carried out and planned by the United States Pacific Fleet , part of the United States Navy . In addition to the countries bordering the Pacific , the United States Marine Corps , the United States Coast Guard and the United States National Guard , the Royal Navy is also invited to take part.

It is anti-submarine , air defense , battlefield management against surface targets, amphibious operations and mine hunting and Maritime Interception Operations , intercepting and searching civilian vessels rehearsed. Particular emphasis is placed on multinational cooperation.

The maneuver is carried out against the background of an invasion of the People's Republic of China in Taiwan ( Taiwan conflict ) and possible attacks by North Korea on South Korea .

history

The first RIMPAC was held in 1971. The exercise will take place in June and July in the waters off Hawaii , where the United States Pacific Command is based. In addition to the US Navy, the Canadian Navy and the Royal Australian Navy were also involved in all RIMPACs . Other participants were Japan, Great Britain, Korea, Chile and Peru. The United States Armed Forces are also regularly represented by participants from the United States Air Force , the United States Marine Corps, and the United States Coast Guard, as well as the National Guard of Hawaii.

Each time these states put together around 50 ships and submarines, as well as up to 200 aircraft and 20,000 soldiers. At the strategic level, nations that are not operationally involved can also take part.

2012

In 2012 there was the 23rd RIMPAC exercise. It took off on June 29, 2012 with 42 ships, 200 aircraft and 25,000 military personnel from 22 nations. For the first time, the maneuver was not directed by the US Navy. The Royal Australian Navy took over the command of the naval forces, the air forces were led by the Royal Canadian Air Force . On July 14th, the ship USS Niagara Falls (AFS-3) was sunk on a SINKEX . The US Navy tested the use of biofuels on their ships throughout the exercise. They used 450,000 gallons (about 1,703,435.30 liters) Biofuel about 12 million US dollars on. On July 17, the USNS Henry J. Kaiser (T-AO-187) delivered 900,000 gallons (approximately 3,406,870.61 liters) of bio and conventional fuel to the Carrier Strike Group of the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) . It was also the first use of the Boeing P-8A "Poseidon" . Two machines from Air Test and Evaluation Squadron One (VX-1) from Marine Corps Base Hawaii were used for 24 scenarios.

The maneuvering ended on August 3, 2012.

A total of 22 nations took part. India , Indonesia , Colombia , Malaysia , Netherlands , Norway , Peru , Philippines , Thailand , Tonga, and the United Kingdom only sent military personnel. Russia participated in RIMPAC for the first time and dispatched a ship. Another 10 states sent ships. In detail these were:

2014

RIMPAC 2014 was the 24th exercise and was held in the summer.

For the first time has Marine Norway with a frigate of the Fridtjof Nansen class participated. Other participants were: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Columbia, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Tonga, the United Kingdom and the United States.

2016

RIMPAC 2016 was the 25th exercise and was held in the summer. It started on June 30th and ended on August 4th. 26 armed forces / nations took part, which is a record. Among other things, the German Navy ( sea ​​battalion and reservists of the Department of Naval Shipping Management ) took part in the maneuver for the first time. 40 ships and submarines, 200 aircraft and 25,000 soldiers were involved.

2018

In 2018 there were 25,000 participants from 26 nations. The Israeli Navy took part for the first time, with Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei also representing countries that do not maintain diplomatic relations with Israel. The German Navy took part in the exercise again.
