The United States Pacific Fleet ( USPACFLT ) is part of the US Navy and comprises the 3rd (central and eastern Pacific) and 7th US fleets (western Pacific and Indian Ocean). Its home port is Pearl Harbor Naval Base , it is managed by the Commander Pacific Fleet ( COMPACFLT ) and is subordinate to the US Indo-Pacific Command in the operational chain .
The manpower is over 140,000. About 200 watercraft belong to the subordinate units. The air fleet of the subordinate units consists of 1,100 aircraft .
Emergence
The U.S. Pacific Fleet was created in 1907 by merging the Asian and Pacific squadrons. In 1910 the ships of the 1st Squadron were again organized in a separate Asian fleet . The general order of December 6, 1922 established the US fleet with the battle fleet as a Pacific military presence.
The modern appearance of the fleet is due to the division of the US fleet into the Atlantic and Pacific fleets before the Second World War .
Until May 1940 , the unit was stationed on the west coast of the United States . In the summer of that year, in response to Japanese expansionism, she was ordered to take an advanced position at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii . Commanding Admiral James O. Richardson opposed the long-term relocation and even protested in person in Washington, DC However, the political considerations were so important that he was replaced by Deputy Admiral Husband E. Kimmel .
Admiral Claude C. Bloch was in command of the local naval district of Pearl Harbor (separate from the fleet) at the time of the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
Composition of the Pacific Fleet in May 1941
At the time of the Japanese attack, the fleet consisted of 9 battleships , 3 aircraft carriers , 12 heavy cruisers , 8 light cruisers , 50 destroyers , 33 submarines and 100 bombers .
