Maurice "Mickey" Franklin Weisner (born November 20, 1917 in Knoxville , Tennessee ; † October 15, 2006 in Pensacola , Florida ) was an American admiral in the US Navy , who was Vice Chief of Naval Operations from 1972 to 1973 , between 1973 and 1976 Commander of the US Pacific Fleet and most recently from 1976 to 1979 Commander of the US Pacific Command .

Life

Military training, World War II and Vietnam War

After attending school, Weisner began his military training at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis and joined the US Navy after graduating in 1941. After further training as a pilot, he found use as a naval aviator on the aircraft carrier USS Wasp , before it was sunk off the island of Guadalcanal during the Battle of Guadalcanal on September 15, 1942 . He then found numerous uses as an officer, staff officer and admiral in the US Navy.

During the Vietnam War , Rear Admiral Weisner was commander of the 1st Aircraft Carrier Division (Carrier Division One) between January and July 1966 and as such led the operations in Southeast Asia as "Yankee Team Commander" in the planning, coordination and execution of the operations in three attacks by aircraft carrier associations the coast of Vietnam . For the services there he was awarded the Legion of Merit for the first time . Another award with the Legion of Merit was made as Vice Admiral for his services to the US Navy in the Vietnam War.

U.S. Navy Admiral and Retired

In 1972 Admiral Weisner succeeded Admiral Ralph Wynne Cousins as Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO) and thus held the second highest position within the leadership of the US Navy after the Chief of Naval Operations . In this role he remained until his replacement by Admiral James L. Holloway III. in September 1973.

He himself then succeeded Admiral Bernard A. Clarey as Commander of the US Pacific Fleet (COMPACFLT) on September 30, 1973 and thus commander of all naval units in the Pacific Ocean , including the 3rd US Fleet and the 7th US Fleet with the Pearl Harbor Naval Base . Weisner stayed at this post until August 12, 1976 and was then replaced by Admiral Thomas B. Hayward . For his services to the US Navy, he was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal four times .

Most recently, Admiral Weisner took over from Admiral Noel AM Gayler as Commander of the US Pacific Command (CDRUSPACOM). This made him the position of commander in chief of all units of the US Army , US Navy, US Marine Corps and the US Air Force in the Pacific region. He held this position until his retirement on October 31, 1979 and was then replaced by Admiral Robert LJ Long . For his services in this role, he was awarded the Defense Distinguished Service Medal , the Army Distinguished Service Medal and the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, as well as the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for the fourth time. In addition, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross twice for his services to naval aviation .

After his retirement to Weisner dedicated to the foundation of the Naval Air Museum ( National Museum of Naval Aviation ) at the Naval Air Station Pensacola ( Naval Air Station Pensacola ) , whose president was Weisner late 1980s and early 1990s.
