Daniel P. Leaf (* approx. 1952 in Shawano , Wisconsin ) is a former Lieutenant General in the US Air Force . He last served as deputy commander of the US Pacific Command from 2005 to 2008 . From 12 to 26 March 2007, he also served as the interim - commander . Since September 2008, he has been Vice President for Strategic Initiatives in the Mission Systems Sector at the US arms manufacturer Northrop Grumman .

Military career

Training and first uses

Leaf graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in political science and received his officer license as a second lieutenant on December 10 through the US Air Force's ROTC program . From December 1974 to November 1975 he was trained as a pilot at Columbus Air Force Base , Mississippi . At the beginning of 1976 he graduated from the relay officer school by distance learning. From March to November 1976 he was on the George Air Force Base , California , at the F-4C / D "Phantom II" trained. He was then transferred to Holloman Air Force Base , New Mexico , in November, and was promoted to First Lieutenant on December 10, where he served as a phantom pilot in the 7th and 9th tactical fighter squadrons. He served in this position until April 1978 and was transferred to Patrick Air Force Base , Florida , in May of that year , where he completed training on the Rockwell OV-10 until August . In August 1978 he was transferred to Osan Air Base in South Korea , where he was promoted to captain on December 5th . He served on Osan AB as OV-10 Forward Air Controller in the 19th Tactical Air Support Squadron; as a flight instructor and examiner in the 51st group and later as head, standardization and evaluation officer of the 5th tactical group. In April 1980, Leaf was transferred to the Pacific and served at Hickam Air Force Base , Hawaii , at the headquarters of the Pacific Air Forces until July 1981 . He served there as a weapons system project officer, as well as a standardization and evaluation officer and flight examiner. After serving in Hawaii, from July 1981 to June 1985, he was employed abroad again, this time as a pilot of an F-15 "Eagle" , as well as an instructor, chief of training planning and flight commander of the 44th tactical fighter squadron and then as head of standardization - and evaluation department of the 18th tactical fighter squadron at the Kadena Air Base in Japan . During this use, Leaf also completed a distance learning course in 1983 from Air Command and Staff College .

First staff assignments and commands

This was followed by his promotion to major on May 1, 1985. He then took over command of the 555th tactical fighter pilot training squadron at Luke AFB and then commanded the 58th operational support squadron. From June 1992 to June 1993 Leaf was then selected student or research assistant of the Air Combat Command at Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama and published in 1993 the work Unity of Command and Interdiction .

In July 1993 he was transferred to Langley Air Force Base , Virginia , and served there first as deputy commander and after his promotion to colonel on January 1, 1994, until July 1995 as commander of the 1st US Operations Group. Another assignment abroad followed from March to June 1995, this time as an operations officer ( J-3 ) of the Joint Task Force Southwest Asia in Riyadh , Saudi Arabia . In this role, Leaf flew missions with the F-15J "Eagle" over southern Iraq during Operation Southern Watch . He then served from Jul 1995 to June 1997 as Deputy Operations Officer of the US Forces Korea and as Assistant Deputy Operations Officer (C-3) of the US Combined Forces Command Korea in the Yongsan Garrison in South Korea.

Back in the United States , Leaf assumed command of the 20th US Fighter Wing at Shaw Air Force Base , South Carolina, from July 1997 to November 1998 . In November 1998 Leaf took over command of the 31st US Fighter Squadron and the 31st Air Expeditionary Wing at Aviano Air Base in Italy , which he led until January 2000. During this time he was in 1998 on the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey stationed and took a season of the squadron in an F-16CJ "Fighting Falcon" at the Operation Northern Watch in part over northern Iraq. In 1998 he also completed the Senior Information Warfare Applications Course at Maxwell AFB . On July 1, 1999, Leaf was promoted to Brigadier General . During NATO - Operation Allied Force , the air operations in the Kosovo War in 1999, Leaf himself flew an aircraft and also commanded night and day combat missions in an F-16CG "Fighting Falcon" over Serbia and Kosovo .

Service in the Iraq war and after

From January 2000 through November 2002, Leaf served as director of operational procurement in the office of the assistant chief of staff for aerospace operations at US Air Force Headquarters in Washington, DC . During this time he also completed the 2000 National Security Leadership Course at Syracuse University in Syracuse , New York , the Joint Flag Officers Warfighting Course at Maxwell AFB, and the Joint Force Air Component Commander Course in 2001 and finally became on April 1, 2002 promoted to major general . In December 2002, he took over the post of Director of Operational Procurement in Washington (DC) and served in that post until July 2003. In August 2003, Leaf was transferred to Colorado Springs , Colorado , and served there until September 2005 as deputy commander of the Air Force Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base . For this position he was promoted again, namely on September 1, 2003 to Lieutenant General . He also graduated in 2004 and the course Leadership at the Peak at the Center for Creative Leadership in Colorado Springs.

He then served since October 2005 as Deputy Commander of the US Pacific Command (PACOM) at Camp HM Smith , Hawaii, under Admiral William J. Fallon . However, since Fallon took command of US Central Command on March 16, 2007 and the confirmation of his nominated successor, Admiral Timothy J. Keating , was still pending, Fallon passed interim command to Leaf on March 12. Fourteen days later on March 26th, Leaf handed over command to his new commander, Keating, at headquarters in Hawaii. In April 2008 he passed the post of Deputy Commander of PACOM to Lieutenant General Douglas M. Fraser and retired on June 1.

Leaf is a fighter pilot with more than 3,600 flight hours on the following aircraft types: F-4C / D "Phantom II" , Rockwell OV-10 , O-2, F-15A / B / C / D "Eagle" , F-16 Block 25 / 40/42/50 "Fighting Falcon" , UH-1N "Iroquois" and HH-60G "Pave Hawk" .

After retirement

In September 2008, US armaments manufacturer Northrop named Grumman Leaf Vice President for Strategic Initiatives in the Mission Systems Sector.
