Timothy J. Keating (born November 5, 1945 in Dayton , Ohio ) is a former admiral in the US Navy and was Commander of the United States Northern Command from November 2004 to March 2007 and Commander of the United States Pacific Command from March 2007 to October 2009 .

Military career

Keating graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1971 . After completing his pilot training in 1973, he was deployed in the Mediterranean on the USS Nimitz . After this tour, he was transferred to Naval Air Station (NAS) Lemoore ( California ) and then served in the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean on board the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk in Carrier Air Wing 15 as a landing signal officer (LSO). From May 1982 to July 1984, Keating served as an administration, operations, and maintenance officer aboard the USS Enterprise . He then served as a staff member and flag lieutenant with the commander of the US Pacific Command .

In May 1987, Keating became command of a squadron of Carrier Air Wing 8 aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean. After this first command, he was subordinated to the Naval Military Personnel Command in Washington, DC and was there as a superior of the Aviation Junior Officer Assignments Branch. When he was deployed as Deputy Commander Air Group of Carrier Air Wing 17 aboard the USS Saratoga in January 1991 , he took part in combat operations supporting Operation Desert Storm .

The first bar using Admiral Keating was on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in the group for Strategic Studies in Newport ( Rhode Iceland ). After this task he provided service in the Joint Task Force Southwest Asia in Riyadh ( Saudi Arabia ) as Deputy CAG of Carrier Air Wing 9 aboard the USS Nimitz and later, in 1993, as CAG of Carrier Air Wing 9 In November 1994, Keating was then transferred to NAS Fallon, Nevada , where he commanded the Naval Strike Warfare Center . A year later, in September 1995, Keating returned to Naval Military Command to become director of the Aviation Officer Distribution Division . From August 1996 to June 1998, he then served as Assistant Director of Operations in the Joint Staff .

In June 1998 he took over command of the carrier combat group 5 , whose home port is Yokosuka ( Japan ). In September 2000, Keating was appointed to the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) office, where he was named deputy CNO for planning, strategy and operations . In February 2002 he took over the command of the US Naval Forces Command Central Command (naval component of the US Central Command ) and the command of the Fifth US Fleet in Manama ( Bahrain ). From October 2003 to October 2004, Keating served as director of the Joint Staff . On November 5, 2004 he finally took over command of NORAD and the United States Northern Command (NORTHCOM).

In February 2007, US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates nominated Keating as the new commander of US Pacific Command and announced Lieutenant General Victor E. Renuart, Jr., to succeed Keating at US Northern Command . The voted the Armed Services Committee of the US Senate to March 19. Therefore, he handed over command to General Renuart on March 23, 2007 and then went to Camp HM Smith , Hawaii . Three days later on March 26th, he took over command of the US Pacific Command from Lieutenant General Daniel P. Leaf at headquarters in Hawaii .

On October 19, 2009, Keating finally handed control of the PACOM to Admiral Robert F. Willard and retired.

Keating has over 5000 hours of flight time. He was the first NORAD -Kommandeur provided by other branches of the armed force than the Air Force came.
