William J. Crowe junior (1985)

William James Crowe, Jr. (born January 2, 1925 in La Grange , Kentucky - † October 18, 2007 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American admiral . He was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and United States Ambassador to Great Britain .

Career

On July 10, 1985, Crowe was appointed by then President Ronald Reagan as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff , a body that brings together the individual commanders of the US armed forces. He was thus the highest military in the United States and held this position under President George Bush until he was retired from the Navy in 1989 . He was succeeded by Colin Powell . After his retirement, he took up his chair again at the University of Oklahoma . In the 1992 presidential election , Crowe caused a sensation because he supported Bill Clinton , the Democratic Party's challenger , even though he had previously worked in the Republican camp around George Bush. After Clinton's election victory, he initially received a high advisory post from him before he was appointed US ambassador to Great Britain from 1994 to 1997 as the successor to Raymond Seitz .

In 1989, Crowe made an appearance as himself on the sitcom Cheers .
