Raymond GH Seitz

Raymond George Hardenbergh Seitz (born December 8, 1940 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) is a former American diplomat and business manager who was Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs between 1989 and 1991 and Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1991 to 1994 was.

Life

After attending school, Seitz completed an undergraduate degree in history at Yale University , which he completed in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA History). In 1966 he joined the Foreign Service and was initially a consultant for consular affairs at the embassy in Canada and then between 1968 and 1970 political officer at the embassy in Kenya . He then acted as a senior staff member at the agency in Bukavu from 1970 to 1972, and from 1972 to 1975 as special assistant to the Director General of the Foreign Service , William O. Hall and, from 1973, his successor Nathaniel Davis .

In 1975 he moved to the UK Embassy as Political Officer , where he worked until 1979 when, on his return, he was Deputy Executive Secretary of the State Department in Washington, DC between 1979 and 1981 . This was followed between 1981 and 1982 as first deputy head of the public affairs unit and from 1982 to 1984 as administrative assistant to Secretary of State George P. Shultz . He was then as Counselor again worked at the embassy in the UK and then took over as successor to Rozanne L. Ridgway August 8, 1989 the post of Head of Unit for Europe and Canada at the State Department ( Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs ) . He remained in this position until April 30, 1991, before Thomas Niles succeeded him on October 3, 1991 .

Most recently, Seitz succeeded Henry E. Catto as Ambassador to the United Kingdom on June 25, 1991 . This post he held until his retirement from the diplomatic service on 10 May 1994, after which he on May 13, 1994 William J. Crowe, Jr. was replaced. In 1995 he was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Medal of the Royal Society of Arts for his services to American-British relations .

After leaving the foreign service, Seitz entered the economy and has been a board member of the Chubb insurance company since 1994 . In addition, he was initially managing director between 1995 and 1996 and deputy chairman of the board of directors of the investment bank Lehman Brothers from 1996 to 2003 . He was then a board member of Hollinger International between 2003 and 2006 and chairman of the board of the resulting Sun-Times Media Group from 2006 to 2009.

His marriage to Suzanne Manning Barr had three children.
