Rozanne Lejeanne Ridgway (born August 22, 1935 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is a former US diplomat and business manager who was, among other things, Ambassador to Finland from 1977 to 1980 and Counselor of the United States Department of State from 1980 to 1981 1983 and 1985 Ambassador to the GDR and most recently Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs between 1985 and 1989 .

Life

Diplomatic career

After attending school, Rozanne L. Ridgway completed an undergraduate degree at Hamline University , which she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts (BA History) in 1957 . She then joined the Foreign Service and was an information specialist in the Department of Intelligence and Research of the State Department in Washington, DC from 1957 to 1959 , before she was HR officer at the Embassy in the Philippines from 1959 to 1962 . She then worked from 1962 to 1964 as a visa clerk at the Consulate General in Palermo and, on her return, from 1964 to 1967 as a consultant for international relations in the European Department of the Foreign Ministry.

Afterwards Rozanne L. Ridgway was political advisor at the embassy in Norway from 1967 to 1970 and from 1970 to 1972 advisor for Ecuador at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before she was deputy head of political planning in the Inter-American unit from 1972 to 1973. She then acted as Permanent Representative of the Ambassador to the Bahamas from 1973 to 1975 and as Deputy Head of the Department for Marine and Fisheries Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 1975 and 1977.

As the successor to Mark Evans Austad , Rozanne L. Ridgway was ambassador to Finland on August 5, 1977 and held this post until February 20, 1980, whereupon James Goodby took over her successor on April 11, 1980 . She herself succeeded Matthew Nimetz as Counselor of the Department of State , remained in this position until February 24, 1981 and was replaced on February 28, 1981 by Robert "Bud" McFarlane .

On January 26, 1983, Rozanne L. Ridgway succeeded Herbert Stuart Okun as Ambassador to the GDR and held this office until July 13, 1985. Successor was then on September 16, 1985 Francis J. Meehan . Most recently, on July 19, 1985, she succeeded Richard Burt as Head of the Department for Europe and Canada in the State Department ( Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs ) . She remained in this position until June 30, 1989 and was then replaced on August 8, 1989 by Raymond GH Seitz .

Economic manager

After leaving the diplomatic service, Rozanne L. Ridgway switched to business and was subsequently a manager in numerous companies. She has been a board member of the technology company 3M since 1989 , of the chemical company Union Carbide since 1990, of the consumer goods and food manufacturer Sara Lee since 1992, of the conglomerate Emerson Electric Company since 1995 and of the personnel service provider ManpowerGroup since 2002 . She was also a member of the board of directors of the aircraft construction company Boeing between 1992 and 2010 .

She was also active as president between 1989 and 1993 and then as co-chair of the Atlantic Council think tank from 1993 to 1996 . In 1998, she was recognized for her achievements by being inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame .
