Atlantic Council

The Atlantic Council is a think tank and public policy group based in Washington, DC Its mission is to promote constructive US leadership and engagement in international affairs based on the central role of the Atlantic community in addressing the international challenges of the 21st century.

Chuck Hagel was chairman until his nomination as Secretary of Defense . On January 15, 2014, Jon Huntsman Jr. took over the presidency from Brent Scowcroft .

history

The association was founded in 1961. Initially, the main focus was on economic issues such as promoting free trade .

Apart from the publications, according to Melvin Small ( Wayne State University ), in the first few years after the foundation, the real strength was in the relationships with influential politicians.

In February 2009, James L. Jones resigned as chairman to serve as national security advisor in President Obama's cabinet . Even Susan Rice left the Council and was US ambassador to the United Nations ; Richard Holbrooke became special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, General Eric K. Shinseki became minister, and Anne-Marie Slaughter became head of the State Department .
