Christoph Malcolm Johannes Freiherr Marschall von Bieberstein (born October 8, 1959 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German journalist and since 1991 editor of the Berlin daily newspaper Der Tagesspiegel .

Christoph von Marschall is a son of Wolfgang Freiherr Marschall von Bieberstein , Professor of Law at the Universities of Frankfurt am Main and Bonn, and Christa-Ella geb. von Wendorff from Pomerania . The constitutional lawyer Fritz Freiherr Marschall von Bieberstein was his grandfather. He was born in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1959 and comes from the Baden line of the former Meißnian noble family Marschall von Bieberstein . His younger brother is the Berlin green politician Heiner von Marschall. In 1978 he graduated from the Lessing-Gymnasium in Frankfurt am Main and studied Eastern European history and political science in Freiburg , Mainz and Krakow . In 1988 he received his doctorate in Freiburg with Gottfried Schramm . From 1989 to 1991 he worked for the Süddeutsche Zeitung and reported, among other things, on the mass exodus of GDR citizens via Hungary to the West and on the democratic turnaround in communist Southeast Europe . In 1991 he moved to Berlin to join the Tagesspiegel . There he headed the opinion page until 2005. He is a regular commentator on Deutschlandfunk , author of political feature articles on Deutschlandradio and writes for the magazine Cicero and The Atlantic Times . From 2005 to 2013 he reported for the Tagesspiegel from the USA. According to the Tagesspiegel , he was the only German newspaper correspondent with access to the White House at that time .

In 2002, Marschall received the German-American Commentary Prize from the German Foreign Office for commenting on the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 .

In 2005, his contribution on Skierbieszow , the birthplace of the former Federal President Horst Köhler in Poland , and on the role of the community as the Germanization laboratory of the SS was awarded the German-Polish journalism prize.

Also in 2005 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland (Knight's Cross) for his efforts towards German-Polish reconciliation. In 2010 the Steuben-Schurz-Gesellschaft, the oldest German-American friendship organization, honored him with its German-American media prize.
