Robert Carl "Bud" McFarlane (born July 12, 1937 in Washington, DC ) is a former US government official, National Security Advisor to US President Ronald Reagan from 1983 to late 1985 and one of the key players in the Iran-Contra affair . He and his successor, Admiral John Poindexter , were implicated in both the Iran and Nicaragua sides of the scandal.

When the scandal became public, McFarlane attempted suicide in 1987 by overdosing on Valium. He was sentenced to two years in prison for lying to the investigative committee. President George Bush Sr. pardoned him in 1992 along with other key figures in the scandal.

Early years

After graduating from high school , McFarlane graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis . After graduating in 1959, he joined the United States Marine Corps , where he earned numerous awards. After his basic training in Quantico , he was in the Association of Marine - artillery after Vietnam sent.
