Life

After schooling studied Lake at Harvard University , completed these studies in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts from (BA) and then completed another study at Trinity College of the University of Cambridge . After training at the American Academy of Diplomacy , he entered the diplomatic service and worked, among other things, from 1969 to 1970 with Henry Kissinger , who was then the national security advisor.

In 1974 he earned a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.) at Princeton University and was initially a professor at Amherst College in Massachusetts , and subsequently during the presidency of Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981 director of policy planning in the State Department . After that, Lake taught from 1981 to 1992 as a professor at Mount Holyoke College, also located in Massachusetts .

After the election of Bill Clinton , he finally became his national security advisor in January 1993 and held this office during Clinton's first term until March 1997. One of his assistants since 1994 was Neal S. Wolin , who became US Treasury Secretary in 2009 . In January 1997 he was nominated by Clinton to succeed John M. Deutch for the office of director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). However, he waived this appeal before the US Senate had completed the confirmation process . The reason for his resignation was that the US Congress had severely criticized him for concealing arms deals.

After retiring from government service, he became a professor at Georgetown University in 1997 . Lake was also involved in numerous foreign and security policy organizations and was a member of the advisory boards of America Abroad and the Partnership for a Secure America, as well as the Council on Foreign Relations and the Freedom House research facility . Between 2007 and 2008 he was again foreign policy advisor to US President Barack Obama . Despite this activity, however, he did not take on any role in Obama's cabinet , although he was again named as a possible CIA director.

He was also one of the signatories of Global Zero , an initiative launched in December 2008 with the goal of complete nuclear disarmament worldwide.

On April 30, 2010, Lake succeeded Ann Veneman as Director of the United Nations Children's Fund and handed over this role to Henrietta H. Fore on January 1, 2018 .
