Thomas E. Donilon (born May 14, 1955 in Providence , Rhode Island ) is an American lawyer. From October 2010 to mid-2013 he was National Security Advisor of the United States under President Barack Obama .

His successor in this office was Susan Rice .

education

Donilon graduated from La Salle Academy in Providence. He received a BA from the Catholic University of America in 1977 and a JD from the University of Virginia in 1985 , where he was also the editor of the Virginia Law Review .

family

His wife, Cathy Russell, with whom he has two children, was Jill Biden's chief executive officer . His brother Mike Donilon was an advisor to Vice President Joe Biden .

Career

From 1 April 1993 to 7 November 1996 Donilon served as Secretary of State for Public Relations ( Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs ) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs operates. From 1999 to 2005 he worked as a lobbyist for Fannie Mae - a connection that raised eyebrows when Donilon was appointed to the Obama administration's transition team because Fannie Mae had to be rescued by state regulators.

Between his work for Fannie Mae and the government office, Donilon was a partner at the Washington law firm O'Melveny & Myers , where he advised company boards on political and legal matters.

Bob Woodward's book "Obama's Wars" (2010) attributed a prominent role to Donilon in formulating the Afghanistan strategy.

Donilon is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations , the Aspen Strategy Group, the National Security Advisory Group to the Congressional Leadership, the Brookings Institution Board of Trustees, the Miller Center of Public Affairs Governing Council, and the Trilateral Commission .

In June 2015 he took part in the 63rd Bilderberg Conference in Telfs-Buchen , Austria .
