The National Security Advisor of the United States (officially Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs , and National Security Advisor ) is a government official of the United States of America . He is a member of the Executive Office of the President (EOP) . On February 20, 2017, President Trump proposed HR McMaster to replace the resigned Michael T. Flynn . His military rank was secured by the Senate on March 15, 2017. He was thus able to take up his post without fear of a break in his military career. On March 22, 2018, President Trump announced that he would replace McMaster with Republican politician John R. Bolton . He took over the office on April 9, 2018 and was dismissed by Donald Trump on September 9, 2019. There have been disputes. Robert C. O'Brien has been the incumbent since 2019 .

history

The office was created during the presidency of Harry S. Truman by the National Security Act of July 26, 1947. During the Second World War , Harry Hopkins already had a comparable function as adviser to the President without officially taking up the office. In 1944, the State-War-Navy Coordinating Committee (SWNCC), a body to coordinate the activities of the US Foreign , Defense, and Navy Department was created.

National Security Council

The security advisor is the chief advisor to the National Security Council , a body that meets under the direction of the president when he needs foreign and security policy advice.

Hierarchical position

Organizationally, the security advisor and his employees belong to the Executive Office of the President and are therefore directly subordinate to the President; the President does not need the approval of the Senate to be appointed unless the person concerned is in military service. This was the case with HR McMaster , for example .
