Frank Charles Carlucci III. (* 18th October 1930 in Scranton , Pennsylvania ; † 3. June 2018 in McLean , Virginia ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . Carlucci was the United States' 16th Secretary of Defense from 1987 to 1989  . From 1986 to 1987 he served as National Security Advisor .

Life

The Italian-born American graduated from Princeton University in 1952. From 1954 to 1955 he attended lectures at Harvard Business School . From 1952 to 1954 he was a member of the United States Navy . From 1956 to 1969 he worked in the American diplomatic service . He then worked for Donald Rumsfeld , who headed the Office of Economic Opportunity , a poverty reduction agency, and followed him in 1971 in this position. From 1974 to 1977 Carlucci served as the US ambassador to Portugal , based in Lisbon . From 1978 to 1981, Carlucci was Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (assistant director of intelligence); He then became Deputy Minister of Defense and remained so until 1983.

On November 23, 1987, he succeeded Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger in the cabinet of President Ronald Reagan ; he held this office until January 20, 1989. His successor Dick Cheney was only introduced into office on March 20, after the John Tower, originally nominated by the new President George Bush , was not confirmed by the Senate .

From 1992 to 2003 Carlucci was chairman of the private equity firm Carlyle Group .
