William Sebastian Cohen (* 28. August 1940 in Bangor , Maine ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ), who in the government of the Democratic US President Bill Clinton of the United States Defense was.

Life

education and profession

After attending public school, he graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick with a bachelor's degree . He graduated from Boston University with a law degree . Before Cohen went into politics, he worked as a lawyer and law professor.

Local politics

He began his political career with his election to the Bangor City Council, of which he was a member from 1969 to 1972. From 1970 to 1971 he was also an elected member of the Bangor School Board (the city's school board ). In 1971 he became mayor of Bangor.

House of Representatives and Senator

When the Democrat William Dodd Hathaway ran for the US Senate and no longer ran for the elections for the United States House of Representatives , Cohen successfully ran for the mandate in 1972.

After three legislative terms in the House of Representatives, he was elected to the US Senate in 1978, preventing William Hathaway's re-election. Cohen was re-elected Senator in 1984 and 1990. Both later Senators from Maine, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe , worked for him; Snowe while serving in the House of Representatives and Collins while serving in the Senate. Cohen resigned from the Senate in 1996, and Collins was elected to succeed him.

Defense Minister

Cohen served from 1997 to 2001 in the cabinet of Democratic President Bill Clinton as Secretary of Defense. During this time he played an important role in directing US military operations in Iraq and Kosovo including the dismissal of Wesley Clark as NATO Commander in Chief Europe (SACEUR).

Cohen is the author of several books including crime fiction , poetry, and (with George J. Mitchell ) an analysis of the Iran-Contra affair . Michael Moore dedicated an episode of his television show, The Awful Truth, to the hunt for Cohen, asking if he was too much of a " wimps " because of his poetry to run the Department of Defense .

Cohen currently heads an international management consulting firm called the Cohen Group , based in Washington, DC .

Private

Cohen is in second marriage with the commentator Janet Langhart of Black Entertainment Television married.
