Joseph C. Noyes

Joseph Cobham Noyes (born September 22, 1798 in Portland , Massachusetts , †  July 28, 1868 there ) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1839 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Noyes was born in 1798 in Portland, which was then part of Massachusetts and has been part of Maine since 1820. He attended the public schools in his home country and moved to Eastport in 1819 . There he worked as a ship chandler and mail order company. In 1833 Noyes was elected to the Maine House of Representatives.

Politically, Noyes joined the Whig Party . In 1836 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC as their candidate in the seventh constituency of Maine . On March 4, 1837, he succeeded Leonard Jarvis from the Democratic Party . Since he was no longer nominated by his party in the elections of 1838, Noyes could only hold one term in Congress until March 3, 1839 .

After serving in the House of Representatives, Noyes worked between 1841 and 1843 as the head of customs in the Passamaquoddy district . He then moved to Portland, where he traded flour. In 1859 he became an accountant for the Portland Co. , a company that manufactured locomotives. As early as 1852, Noyes was one of the founders of the Portland Savings Bank . Until his death in 1868 he was the treasurer of this bank and was responsible for the balance sheets.
