Rochelle M. "Chellie" Pingree (born April 2, 1955 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American politician . Since 2009, it represents the first constituency of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Chellie Pingree attended the University of Southern Maine in Portland until 1973 . She then studied at the College of the Atlantic at Bar Harbor until 1979 . She then became a successful business woman in Maine. She was involved in farming, homeworking, and a North Haven store . Then she got into the knitting business. She lives in North Haven and has three children, including the Democratic politician Hannah Pingree .

Chellie Pingree is a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1980s, she held several public offices in North Haven. She was a member of the Maine Senate from 1992 to 2000 . There she temporarily led the democratic group. In 2002, Pingree ran unsuccessfully against Susan Collins for the US Senate .

In the 2008 congressional election, she was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 1st Congressional Constituency of Maine . There she took over from Tom Allen on January 3, 2009 . After four re-elections so far in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016, she can continue to hold office today. Your new legislative period runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.

After the Republican Senator of the state of Olympia Snowe announced that she would not run again in the 2012 Senate elections, there was speculation about Pingree's renewed application for the US Senate. It refrained from doing so when the former Maine Governor Angus King declared his candidacy for an independent.
