Seth L. Milliken

Seth Llewellyn Milliken (born December 12, 1831 in Montville , Waldo County , Maine , †  April 18, 1897 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1897 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Seth Milliken attended his home public schools and Waterville College . He then studied at Union College in Schenectady ( New York ) until 1856 . Politically, Milliken became a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the House of Representatives from Maine in 1857 and 1858 . Then he moved to Belfast .

Between 1859 and 1871, Milliken was an employee of the Maine Supreme Court. He studied law himself and was admitted to the bar in 1871, but did not work in that profession. In the years 1876 and 1884 he was a delegate to the respective Republican National Conventions , at which Rutherford B. Hayes and later James G. Blaine were nominated as presidential candidates.

In 1882, Milliken was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the third constituency of Maine. There he took over from Stephen Lindsey on March 4, 1883 . After seven re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on April 18, 1882 . He was temporarily chairman of the committee that dealt with public properties.
