Elisha Hunt Allen
Elisha Hunt Allen (born January 28, 1804 in New Salem , Franklin County , Massachusetts , † January 1, 1883 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1841 and 1843 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Elisha Allen was the son of Samuel Clesson Allen (1772-1842), who sat for Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives between 1817 and 1829. The younger Allen attended New Salem Academy and then, until 1823, Williams College in Williamstown . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1825, he began to practice this profession in Brattleboro ( Vermont ). He later relocated his residence and law firm to Bangor , Maine.
Everyone joined the Whig Party . Between 1835 and 1840 he was an MP in the Maine House of Representatives . In 1838 he served as its president . In 1840 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the eighth constituency of Maine, where he succeeded Thomas Davee of the Democratic Party on March 4, 1841 . The eighth district of Maine was abolished in the next elections. Allen tried unsuccessfully to be re- elected to Congress in another district .
In 1846, Allen was re-elected to the Maine House of Representatives. In 1847 he moved to Boston , where he worked as a lawyer again. Allen remained politically active in his new home as well. In 1849 he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives. In 1850 he became the American consul in what was then the Kingdom of Hawaii . There he established close contacts with the local government. Finally, he was first appointed as the successor to Gerrit P. Judd as Minister of Finance and later also as Chief Justice of the Hawaiian Islands. His last post was that of the Hawaiian Ambassador to Washington. In this capacity he attended the New Year reception of US President Chester A. Arthur on January 1, 1883 . During this event he died suddenly. Elisha Allen was married twice and had a total of six children.
