Asher Crosby Hinds (born February 6, 1863 in Benton , Kennebec County , Maine , † May 1, 1919 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1911 and 1917 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Asher Hinds attended his homeland public schools and the Coburn Classical Institute . He then studied until 1883 at Colby College in Waterville . From 1884 he worked in Portland in the newspaper business. From 1889 to 1891 he worked for the then Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Thomas Brackett Reed . Between 1895 and 1911 Hinds remained in the administration of the House of Representatives.

Politically, Hinds was a member of the Republican Party . In the 1910 congressional elections he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the first constituency of Maine. There he took over on March 4, 1911, succeeding the late Amos L. Allen . After two re-elections, Hinds was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1917 . During this time the 16th and 17th amendments to the constitution were discussed and passed there.

After his time in the US House of Representatives ended, Asher Hinds resided in Washington. He died there on May 1st, 1919. He was then buried in Portland.
