Stanley R. Tupper
Stanley Roger Tupper (born January 25, 1921 in Boothbay Harbor , Lincoln County , Maine , † January 6, 2006 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1961 and 1967 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Stanley Tupper attended public schools in his home country including the Hebron Academy . He then studied at Middlebury College in Vermont and at La Salle Extension University in Chicago . During the Second World War he served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1949, he began to practice in his new profession.
Politically, Tupper was a member of the Republican Party . He served on the Boothbay Harbor ward council in his hometown of 1948 and 1949; In 1949 he was chairman of this body. Between 1953 and 1954 he was a member of the Maine House of Representatives . At the same time he was the fisheries commissioner of the government of his state between 1953 and 1957. From 1959 to 1960, Tupper served as the Assistant Attorney General of Maine.
In 1960, Tupper was elected to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC in Maine's Second Constituency . There he took over from Frank M. Coffin of the Democratic Party on January 3, 1961 . In 1962 and 1964 he was elected to the US House of Representatives for the first district, replacing Peter A. Garland . This allowed Tupper to complete a total of three legislative terms in Congress between January 3, 1961 and January 3, 1967 . This time was determined by the events surrounding the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War . In 1964, Congress ratified the 24th Amendment to the Constitution.
In 1966, Tupper declined to run again. In 1967 he was the American representative at the world exhibition ( Expo 67 ) in Montreal . Then he worked again as a lawyer. Between 1975 and 1976, Tupper represented US interests in an international commission that dealt with fishing problems in the Northeast Atlantic. He then withdrew from politics. Stanley Tupper died on January 6, 2006 in Bootbay Harbor, his birthplace.
