Edwin C. Burleigh

Edwin Chick Burleigh (* 27. November 1843 in Linneus , Maine ; † 16th June 1916 in Augusta , Maine) was an American politician and from 1889 to 1893 Governor of the State of Maine, he also in both houses of Congress represented.

Early years and political advancement

Edwin Burleigh attended local schools in his home country and then the Houlton Academy . He then worked as a land surveyor, teacher and civil servant. Between 1865 and 1878 he was the head of the state land agent ( State land agent ), from 1880 to 1885 he was employed in the Maine Treasury. In between he was deputy head of administration of the state parliament. Finally, Burleigh himself became Treasurer of his state from 1885 to 1888 . From 1887 he was also the owner of the newspaper "Kennebec Journal". In 1888 he was elected as the new governor of his Republican Party .

Governor, Congressman and Senator

Burleigh took up his new office on January 2, 1889. After re-election in 1890, he could remain in office until January 4, 1893. The National Governors Association describes his governor as competent and successful. Apparently there were no significant incidents during his reign either.

Even after the end of his governorship, Burleigh remained politically active. Between 1897 and 1911 he was a member of the US House of Representatives , where he succeeded the late Seth L. Milliken and was re-elected six times before failing in 1910. After initially taking care of his newspaper again, he was elected to the US Senate in 1912, to which he belonged from March 4, 1913 until his death. Edwin Burleigh was married to Mary Jane Bither, with whom he had two children.
