Jeremiah Goodwin

Jeremiah Goodwin (born July 1, 1785 in Kittery , Maine , † July 31, 1857 in Somersworth , New Hampshire ) was an American politician who was Maine State Treasurer in 1839 .

Life

Jeremiah Goodwin was born in 1785 to Daniel Goodwin and Sarah Hobbs.

Goodwin worked in a grocery store in Portsmouth , New Hampshire until he was twenty-first birthday . About 1811 he moved to Alfred , Maine, where he entered a trading business. In the British-American War he served as first lieutenant in the 33rd Infantry and in 1813 he was appointed paymaster . He held this position until the end of the war in 1815.

In 1812 he was appointed Alfred's postmaster, and he held this post for 27 years. He was elected to the York County Charter Register in 1816 , where he served until 1836. As a member of the Democratic Party , he was York County's 182 delegate to the Democratic Party Assembly in Baltimore at which President Andrew Jackson was nominated for re-election. He held the office of State Treasurer in 1839. During his tenure, the Aroostook War took place over the Republic of Madawaska . His tasks included providing funds for the recruitment and equipping of the military.

Jeremiah Goodwin married Sarah Ann Penhallow (1784–1842) for the first time in 1809. He had five children with her. In his second marriage in 1843 he married Elizabeth Martha Emery (1827–1855), with whom he had two other daughters. He died on July 31, 1857 in Somersworth, New Hampshire. His grave is in Somersworth Cemetery.
