James B. Cahoon

James Blake Cahoon (born February 10, 1802 in Sutton , Vermont , † January 28, 1867 in Portland , Maine ) was an American politician , Maine State Treasurer in 1838 and Mayor from 1849 to 1850 and from 1853 to 1854 Portland was.

Life

James B. Cahoon was born in Sutton, Vermont to James Cahoon and Betsey Blake.

A member of the Whig Party , Cahoon was Maine State Treasurer in 1838 and Mayor of Portland from 1849 to 1850. He switched to the newly formed Democratic Party and was mayor of Portland for a second time from 1853 to 1854.

In 1839 he was a founding member of the Portland Anti-Slavery Society. Cahoon was a member of the Freemasons and Grand Trasurer from 1831 to 1833.

James B. Cahoon was with Martha Homer. They had three daughters and one son. He died in Portland on January 28, 1867. His grave is in Portland's Eastern Cemetery.
