Daniel Williams (politician, 1795)

Daniel Williams (born November 12, 1795 in Augusta , † 1870 ) was an American politician who was Maine State Treasurer in 1840 .

Life

Daniel Williams was born in 1795 to Seth Williams and Zilpha Ingraham.

Williams studied law with his brother Reuel Williams and worked with his brother as a lawyer for several years. As a member of the Democratic Party he was Selectman in Augusta from 1828 to 1832, in 1831 a member of the House of Representatives from Maine and in 1840 Maine State Treasurer. In 1868 he was elected Major of Augusta. He was also a judge at the Kennebec County's Probate Court from 1848 to 1855 . He was one of the supporters of the construction of Edwards Dam and lost his property in the process.

Daniel Williams' first marriage was Mary Sawtelle. He had four children with her. She died in 1827. In his second marriage, he married Hannah Bridge in 1832, with whom he had another daughter.
