Samuel Shapiro (politician)

Samuel Shapiro (born August 26, 1927 in Brownsville , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician who was Maine State Treasurer from 1981 to 1996 .

Life

Samuel Shapiro was born in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, to Maurice Shapiro and Anna Silver. His parents were immigrants, the father from Ukraine, the mother from Lithuania. Shapiro was born into a Jewish family and belongs to Judaism.

After two years of service in the United States Navy , he attended the University of Pittsburgh with the help of the GI Bill . There he graduated in 1952. He then moved to Waterville , Maine , and ran several home furnishings stores with his father-in-law.

As a member of the Democratic Party , he was Maine State Treasurer from 1981 to 1996.

Samuel Shapiro married Carol Plavin in the fall of 1953, with whom he had three children. His wife died in 2013.
