F. Marion Simpson

Francis Marion Simpson (* 1854 in Dixmont , Maine , † June 16, 1932 in Bangor , Maine) was an American businessman and politician who was Maine State Treasurer from 1895 to 1900 .

Life

F. Marion Simpson was born in Dixmont, Maine to Frederick A. and Harriet L. Simpson. He attended local schools and graduated from the Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield . In 1868 he moved to Carmel with his parents . There he worked as a salesman for his father, who ran a trade first in Dixmont and later in Carmel Village. He took over the business from his father when he was 24 and ran it until 1884 when he partnered with Lewis C. Whitten. Then they traded under the name Simpson & Whitten.

In addition to his business, he worked as an insurance salesman for a fire insurance company and in 1878 he was appointed Trial Justice of Penobscot County . He held this position for fourteen years.

Politically, Simpson was a member of the Republican Party . He was a Town Clerk for six years, a Collector of Taxes for two years, and Chairman of the Carmel Board of Selectmen for three years. He was a member of the Republican County Committee of Penobscot County and served as chairman of the Republican Town Committee of Carmel for sixteen years.

He was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1884 and served as a Senator in the Maine Senate from 1888 to 1891 . While in the House of Representatives, he chaired the Inland Waterways and Native American Affairs Committee and was a member of the Financial Affairs, Banks and Banking, State Prison, Ways and Bridges, and Public Buildings committees.

He was the Postmaster of Carmel and served on the Executive Council from 1891 to 1892. From 1893 to 1894 he was a member of the Governors Council of Governor Cleaves.

From 1895 to 1900 he was Treasurer of Maine and in 1899, 1904 and 1924 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Maine.

Simpson married Mary Linnie Benjamin in 1884. They had a son. He died on June 16, 1932 in Bangor, his grave is in Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor.

The Simpson Memorial Library in Carmel was donated in his name.
