history

The first permanent settler to build in the Pittsfield area was Moses Martin . In 1795 the woodcutter and hunter settled here with his wife Anna, two sons and two daughters, and lived in good neighborhood with the Abenaki Indians of the region. The family came from neighboring Norridgewock.

Around 1800 more settlers came and the settlement was called "Plymouth Gore". From 1816 it was renamed "Sebasticook Plantation" and organized on June 19, 1819 as an independent Town Warsaw . In 1824 the name was changed to Pittsfield in honor of the landowner William Pitts , who owned large parts of the area. Early settlers paid their rents in the form of corn and wheat. The population of the city continued to grow, which must also be attributed to the railroad , but is mainly due to the settlement of numerous weaving mills and water mills. Another important growth factor was the establishment of the Maine Central Institute in 1866, as this educational opportunity attracted more settlers.

Downtown Pittsfield was completely destroyed in a fire in 1881 , but was rebuilt within a very short time. Another railway line connected Pittsfield with Hartland from 1886. With the Pittsfield Electric Light and Power Company connected to the power grid, the woodworking industry became increasingly important. Between 1900 and 1920 the population of Pittsfield fell briefly before it experienced a renewed boom in the late 1920s and almost reached its present size. As the weaving mills withdrew more and more from New England and were relocated to the south, Pittsfield switched to industrial shoe production at the initiative of the citizens. The Civil Works Administration's New Deal program turned the Pittsfield Racecourse into a small airport. This was mainly used by Navy pilots who were stationed on the Maine coast for training flights. The first fire-fighting aircraft of the “pine” state were also stationed here. In the 1960s, the airfield was renovated and is now used by small charter planes from the big cities on the east coast and by business and private individuals. With the construction of the airport various construction companies settled in Pittsfield. These firms were often run by the sons of second generation Italian immigrants who settled west of Pittsfield.

The opening of Interstate 95 (which extends to the southern tip of Florida ) changed the entire cityscape, as the previous main road was no longer the most important traffic route. On the access road to the Interstate Highway, supermarkets , motels and gas stations soon opened to lure passers-by from the Interstate down into town. The highway also replaced the train as the most important means of transport , so that fewer and fewer trains stopped in the small town.

During this time, the Maine Central Institute (MCI) became a private school with boarding facilities and therefore also very popular with foreign students, so that many foreign cultural influences came to the city; the level of instruction was also well above that of high schools .
