Geographical location
Detroit is located in southeast Somerset County and is bordered by Penobscot County to the east and Waldo County to the south. The Sebasticook River and the East Branch of the Sebasticook River flow centrally through the area in a south-westerly direction. The Carlton Pond borders in the south . The surface is flat, without any significant elevations.

history
Detroit was organized as a town on February 19, 1828. Initially under the name Chandlerville . This was changed on March 18, 1841 in Detroit. Previously, the area was part of Township No. 5, Second Range North of Waldo Patent (T5 R2 NWP) . The town of Plymouth was split off from the area in 1826 and land was given to Pittsfield in 1855.
Early settlers in the area were Joseph and Amos Chandler. John Chandler was one of the larger landowners and the town was initially named after the organization after him. More settlers reached the area, including the Frye family, who founded a tannery in 1842.
