history

Settlement of the area started in 1820. After the survey, the area was named Township No. 4, Second Range North of Bingham's Kennebec Purchase (T4 R2 NBKP) and organized several times as Holdentown or Holden Plantation for organizational reasons. As a town, Moose River was finally organized on October 7, 1957 and named after the Moose River Plantation organized in 1859 from which the town emerged. This got its name from the river of the same name.
