history
A first settlement is said to have been built in Canaan around 1770. The area was surveyed in 1779 by John Jones and organized as a town on June 18, 1788. The name was derived from the beauty of the landscape and the fertile soil in the area. Previously, the area was named as Wesserunset Plantation or Heywoodston after the first settler Peter Heywood. The area of the town of Skowhegan initially also belonged to the area. In the summer of 1911 a fire destroyed a large part of Canaan.
In 1814 land was given up from which the town of Bloomfield was founded, which was incorporated into Skowhegan in 1814. In 1823 land was given to Milburn, which today also belongs to Skowhegan. Part of Warsaw, now Pittsfield, was added in 1824, and parts in 1830 and 1841. Parts of Hartland were added in 1849. Part of Clinton in 1849, but returned as early as 1850.
