history

Originally the area was inhabited by a tribe of the Abenaki Indians who fished at the falls from spring to autumn. The name of the place comes from them: it means something like "the place where you wait for the fish".

On September 29, 1775, Colonel Benedict Arnold and his troops passed this place on their way along the Kennebec River to Quebec. A bronze plaque reminds of this in the main street.

On April 30, 1772, the first white settlers, a Joseph Weston and his family, arrived at the site; as early as 1773 a village was founded on the north bank of the river. It was initially considered part of the nearby Canaan ; on February 5, 1823, the place became independent under the name Millburn . However, the residents preferred the old name of the settlement and renamed the town Skowhegan in 1836. In 1861, the parish of Bloomfield, across the river, was incorporated. The waterfall has been used systematically for energy production since the late 19th century, and with the general industrialization of the area, Skowhegan became a thriving paper and sawmill town. Nowadays the industry is dominated by wood processing companies and a large shoe factory.
