history

Ripley was organized as a town on December 11, 1816. The area was surveyed as Township No. 5, Fifth Range North of Waldo Patent (T5 R5 NWP) , it was part of the Monmouth Academy Grant. In 1834 the area north of the Sebasticook River was organized as an independent Town Cambridge. Land was given to St. Albans in 1862; this land swap was withdrawn in 2002.

The area was settled around 1801 and the town was named after Eleazer Wheelock Ripley , general in the British-American War and MP for Louisiana in the United States House of Representatives.

The Maine State Route 23 , which connects Ripley with Harmony in the west and Dexter in the east, and Maine State Route 152 , which connects Ripley in the north with Cambridge and in the south with St. Albans, runs through Ripley in a west-easterly direction .
