history

Settlement of the area began in 1771 with Jonathan Emery, who built a house on Emery Hill near the banks of the Kennebec River. More settlers settled in the area. Initially the area was named Kendalls Mills after the resident General William Kendall, then organized as Fairfield Plantation and organized as Town Fairfield on June 18, 1788.

Land was given to Norridgewock in 1834 and 1841, and land was given to Bloomfield, which was later taken over by Skowhegan, in 1858. An island in the Kennebec River was added by Benton in 1873.

Interstate 95 runs through Fairfield and US Highway 201 runs parallel to the Kennebec River . The Maine State Route 16 runs in a north-south direction along the eastern border of the town parallel to the Kennebec River and in the south-west along the Carrabassett River. Public facilities

The Lawrence Public Library is located in Fairfield . It is named after Edward Jones Lawrence, who donated it to the town following information from his daughter Addie. At the town assembly in March 1900, the town accepted the offer for a library and on July 25, 1901, the library was inaugurated.
