The town "Jackman", which was organized on March 5, 1895, was named after him.

Previously, the area was organized as the Moose River Plantation in 1852. The area was surveyed under the designation Township No. 4, First Range North of Bingham's Kennebec Purchase (T4 R1 NBKP) .

The Canadian Pacific Railway reached the area with one line in 1888. With the establishment of the Kellogg Lumber Company on Long Pond in 1906, the timber industry flourished and became the main livelihood for the residents of the region.
