Another confirmation took place in 1903 for tax reasons. Even before the area was organized, the 1790 census counted a total of 105 inhabitants. The origin of the name is not clear. A statement says the name came from "scraped field" (dt. Been tarnished field ), another explanation attributes the name back to the expression in Abenaki for "crooked stream" (dt. Curved current ).

Before the area was organized, it was named Township No. 1, Third Range Bingham's Kennebec Purchase, East of Kennebec River (T1 R3 BKP EKR) or also called Spaulding .

The Appalachian Trail continues through the northeast and northwest parts of town to the Forks and Pleasant Pond.
